I am 77 years of age and I have fairly recently become almost addictive to sitting opposite a PC

I am taking a great advantage of the fact that I now feel fairly conversant or should I say computer savvy. So I am often researching anything that is connected with the Royal West Kent Regiment since it was within a short distance of
my family's residence in the Mediterranean George Cross Island of Malta.

Today only by accident I came across your website and since I am always hungry for new things learned; I am clicking through every single opportunity I come across dealing with Dover's George Cross award. I thought to myself, here is something I feel rather close to even though I am not a Doverian. However, by birth I am indeed part and parcel of a country that had also earned the George Cross award by George V1. Not only was I born and bred on the island fortress of Malta but I experienced and lived through World War 2

I feel all the more elated today as I learned that Malta is most likely seen as having much in common with Dover, here in the U.K.

I shall continue to search for more information as regards the RWK Regiment. I am focusing in finding out all of the names and hopefully photos of those fallen ones of the RWK Regiment that were neighbours of us when they were stationed in Malta. One particular RWK soldier whose name I recall is James Eary. I am keen to learn whether he is still with us or perhaps is also R I P.

May thanks for this opportunity for me to have made myself a small part of Dover. If anyone feels inclined to contact me with any suggestions or comments with regards to anything I have stated above, please feel free to do so.

Wishing you all a bright, healthy and peaceful future.

Yours faithfully,
Joe Farrugia

As we welcome 2010 it is a good time to reflect on 2009 and plan for the year ahead. For the George Cross for Dover Campaign it was a good year in terms of publicity and spreading awareness of the campaign.
Over the Easter weekend three of us lived and slept in the Grand Shaft in order to highlight the conditions under which much of Dover survived the war. Attached to this we set up a marquee with an exhibition of wartime Dover pictures and artefacts that attracted a lot of interest.
Later in the year we managed to stage a play/pantomime in the Town Hall that included ‘letters from Dover’ which described wartime life in the town. Both of these events managed to attract a lot of positive media attention and helped draw attention to the campaign and its aims.

Apart from the obvious fight to gain Dover its too long neglected award, high on our list is the establishment of a memorial garden to the civilian casualties of war. This featured prominently in the publicity we gained and drew in more much needed support for it. We can honestly say that 2009 raised awareness of the campaign to levels we have long striven for and made far more people sympathetic to our aims.

However 2009 also had its difficulties for us. Ill health, and other factors, led to some coming and going within our committee. While still as committed as ever to the aims of the campaign the fact that all of us are volunteers doing this in our spare time has led to a strain on our resources and stamina. Now that we have the experience and equipment to mount a travelling exhibition, now that we have an understanding of how to attract the publicity that helps so much with the campaign and as we have always had the commitment to win we need to press forward.

In 2010 we need more members to come to our meetings and share their ideas and enthusiasm and we need committee members willing to give their time and expertise to co-ordinating the campaign. The Cinque Port Arms, Clarence Place, Eastern Docks, Dover have very kindly given us the use of a meeting room and on Tuesday 12th January we will be holding an Extraordinary General Meeting to set the way for the year ahead. All are welcome to come along, listen, join and be part of the campaign to gain Dover the recognition it deserves and set an example for others to follow in honouring our civilian casualties.
Please do come, we cannot do it without you.

Reminder time. This very Thursday the AGM of The George Cross for Dover Campaign takes place at The Cinque Ports Arms on the Western Docks, Dover. As this is one of the very few campaigns aiming to remember and recognise the part played by the civilian population during war time there is a lot to be done. Honouring the civilians that lost their lives due to conflict is too often neglected and deserves to be corrected.

It is also a tiring uphill struggle and we always need fresh blood with new ideas and enthusiasms to keep the campaign invigorated. We will never pretend that it is easy but it is immensely rewarding. Knowing that the support is there is what helps to keep the campaign going.

Everyone is welcome and if anyone wants to join on the night in order to vote, stand for the committee or just be there to offer support they can. It will be good to see as many of you there as possible it should be an interesting night.

Although I was born in Hawkhurst, my whole family history is centred around the Dover area. I feel strongly that the town of Dover and its brave people should be recognised for their defiance and perseverance during the troubles of WW2. My dad's father was an officer in the National Fire Service and attended the aftermath of many of the bombings which the town suffered.
The George Cross for Dover Campaign definitely has my wholehearted support.

Thanking everyone for their support it is time, once again, for our AGM. All suppoerters are welcome to attend and all members paid up by the night (only 3 quid a year) are entitled to vote and stand for office.
This years AGM is on 24th September 2009 at the Cinque Ports Ph, Western Docks, Dover, starting at 7:30 pm. It would be nice to see as many of you there as possible.

We thank you all for your good wishes and assure you all that the campaign continues to fight for our three aims.
1. The proper recognition for Dover's key role to the nation during wartime (and since).
2. A permenant memorial to the civilian casualties of conflict.
3. Making the world aware of Dover's rich historical heritage.

All those who support these aims might like to know that on Thursday 16th July we are having an Extraordinary General Meeting (just before the panto rehearsals) in the Cinque Ports ph opposite the cruise terminal in the Western Docks. This will start at 7:00 pm and as we are always keen to welcome new ideas or just plain enthusiasm anyone who would like to be a part of the campaign is welcome to attend.
